ARRS Funding – But I want the benefit of Clinical Pharmacist now!

ARRS funding for Clinical Pharmacists is leading to an upsurge in the recruitment of Clinical Pharmacist across England. As a pharmacist myself, I have been frustrated for years about the underuse of the latent potential of Clinical pharmacist to transform Primary Care. Surely the ARRS funding will mean real change for PCNs and practices and quickly? Unfortunately not. The pharmacist cavalry is coming over the hill to take away large chunks of GP workload, but although it’s in plain sight, it’s arriving at a canter rather than a gallop.

The 5 Year Forward View document and subsequent Additional Roles Reimbursement Scheme provides funding for roles like Clinical Pharmacist, Physicians Associates and Paramedics, which is fantastic. Still, GPs will not feel the full benefit for five years, and many Primary Care Networks (PCN) and their member practices want that support now!
