AHSN funding available for Feno testing
Medacy is looking to partner with Primary Care Networks to facilitate the roll-out of FeNO testing for Asthmatic patients. Each Academic Health Science Network (AHSN) has £250,000 to spend on projects that will enable the uptake of FeNO testing, and bids need to be submitted by the end of April 2021.
The NHS is looking for projects that:
- Train and educate clinicians to deliver an interpret FeNO testing. √
- Educate patients to understand FeNO score and raise awareness of FeNO testing. √
- Collect data on operational benefits, outcome, cost savings and unintended consequences. √
- Develop an exemplar pathway for FeNO testing. √
- Source sustainable funding at CCG, STP or ICS level. √
- Innovative models of delivery √
- Develop strong links between primary and secondary care settings √

Two models to use AHSN FeNO funding
Medacy has created two models to facilitate the roll-out of FeNO testing, which we believe deliver against the aims of the project:
- Training only. In this model, funding covers the purchase of FeNO testing devices and pays for training. Medacy provides an expert Clinical Pharmacist or Clinical Nurse Specialist to provide both onsite and remote training. This training facilitates rapid training and uptake of this useful additional test to help diagnose Asthma and monitor Asthma control. Medacy envisions that this training will be delivered across a single PCN initially and then rolled out across a CCG or ICS footprint.
- Space and Training – CliniCabin – Medacy has partnered with a provider of innovative pod-style clinical rooms with full air exchange and filtration systems. These clinical pods will mean that PCNs have space to start FeNO testing straight away. The Pods will then have a covid-secure resource to re-start spirometry, peak flow testing etc. For this Space and Training option, Medacy will work with the PCN to develop a bid to cover the training, FeNO testing machines, and the Clinical Pod costs.

The Accelerated Access Collaborative has identified FeNO testing as a Rapid Update Product. £250,000 is available via the Pathway Transformation Fund for each AHSN.
PCN Delivery model for FeNO
Medacy understands that all GPs, Practices and PCNs are busy with vaccination programmes, so Medacy will work with PCNs to submit a bid and manage the process on the PCNs behalf.
At Medacy, we believe that the funding for the roll-out of FeNO represents a fantastic opportunity for PCNs to improve Asthma Care. We believe that the training on offer from Medacy’s Clinical Team can facilitate rapid roll-out. The Clinical Pod offers the only opportunity to get this off the ground in the foreseeable future.
Medacy also believes that this project also offers PCN Clinical Pharmacists an ideal opportunity to be involved in a project and deliver improved patient outcomes. The plan is to work with these Clinical Pharmacists to pass on the knowledge to continue the training the Medacy training programme has been completed.
